Winter is different this year. Be more cat.

Usually winters are the worst. It’s too cold, too grey, too miserable, I go stir crazy stuck inside. This winter feels different. Or more precisely I am different.

I now aim to walk 10k steps every day whatever the weather. My son joins me and we have nice chats and giggles walking around the village.

I have to remind myself that it’s ego that is cold and miserable, that seeks shelter and moans about the weather. Soul has no complaints, it finds beauty, awe and joy everywhere — in the rain, darkness or cold. Getting out of the head helps, as does getting clothing right — if you wrap up well and have comfortable waterproof shoes, no weather is bad weather.

I’ve read about hygge and now practice self care. Long hot shower now and then. A facial and lots of moisturiser. Sitting (sometimes napping!) by the fireplace. Occasionally treating myself and the boys to something yummy even if it’s not very healthy. Learning new cooking and baking recipes. Taking my iron supplement. And if I feel like some sunshine, tucking into a juicy Spanish orange or sipping sweet and sticky Pedro Jimenez jerez.

I try to eat well. I cook wholesome meals. I bake something yummy with low sugar and/or no gluten or make a vegan dessert. I learn new recipes. I do what I love — learning. I am gobbling up books (non fiction) and taking a writing course online. I listen to podcasts. Planning at least one do-something-new event a month or a quarter keeps things interesting — I have been to a breathwork class this week.

And I make sure I sleep enough (be more cat!). One month till spring… Not that I am counting down! 🙂

Walking in winter, spring, summer or autumn – it is merely different versions of the same enjoyment. I read somewhere that a rainy day spent outside is better than a sunny day spent at a desk or indoors. Amen to that. And let’s not forget the night! Look up on a cold clear night, not down at your feet.
