Money is such a huge thing in our lives. We take it very seriously and make it very real. I have dedicated a few posts to money on this blog. There is “What if money was no object” by Alan Watts, “Minimalist happiness: radical saving as a way to liberation“, and “Happiness at work – promotion is not the only way“.
What if money was not an issue? In the words of Alan Watts, “How would you really enjoy spending your life?” and “What do you desire?”
Imagine you won the lottery, and today, just now, you have got $100,000,000 deposited into your account. Admin and bureaucracy aside, what are you going to do? What are your priorities going to be today, this week, this month, next year? What life are you going to create starting from today?
Doing this exercise now surprised me. It made me realise that only occasionally money stops me from doing what I want; most of the time, if I really want something, I make it happen. I find a cheaper or free alternative, I find a different way of doing it, I save, I change my perspective but I find a way.
Asking this question made me realise that I built a life that I am mostly happy with. I have the basics covered, I live with people I love and I dabble in my interests in a way that is good for the wallet and the planet.
I explore my likes, I experiment, I try to stay open to what manifests. I embrace mediocrity and accept that creating and living a simple, good life is an achievement in itself.
Money or no money, I’d still read, write, love nature, dabble in science and medicine, stan people creating beauty, love, laugh and help however I can.
So, turns out, I already have everything that I need! Well, how about that! What about you? What would you do if money was not an issue?
like you, i’ve pretty much created the life i love. one more step next year when i retire –
