Incredible Water Bears, We Come From Plants, And Turtle In Operating Theatre

Today’s post is going to be about science, because as you may know, scientific news is one thing that makes me happy. Here is a couple of cool things that came onto my radar this week from the world of science.

The biggest story imho must be Wired’s Absurd Creature of the Week dedicated to water bears. First, it’s a very cool name for a critter. Second, they look amazing. Third, this thing is apparently practically impossible to destroy. You can boil it, freeze it, expose it to radiation, send it into open space – and it will survive. Think about it – water bears can travel into space, land on an alien planet and, as long as there is water for them to rehydrate, they will live on. This beats such survivalists as rats and cockroaches. Water bears live around us, in dirt, and there are 1,000 species of them. Mind boggling if you ask me!

The no less incredible feature comes from Live Science, and it’s about results of the genetic study of sea anemones (bear with me). Turns out that not only ‘simple’ organisms have the same complex gene interactions as humans, but also their genetic make up seems to indicate that we, humans, share genetic organisation with all living organisms, and that includes plants. You and me were plants at some point. We are all truly ONE. Go water your indoor plant right now!

And finally, a news post from I Fucking Love Science, which is an amazing resource for those who want to keep up with the latest in the world of science. It is about a turtle who struggled to give birth and so had a c section. First, c section on a turtle, very cool. Second, the animal is saved, by humans and through technology. Even though she is kept in captivity. And so – aw.

What do you feel when you read news like this? I feel excited about the world we live in. And happy for the humankind. And that we should all retrain into scientists and study the world around us, strive to make it better while being in the state of constant awe.
